Banana Sundae

Hello blog readers!

This is a post from Alice (Louise's sister - she may have mentioned me in passing =) ). I'm hoping writing a post is as easy as it looks like it could be. Well, we'll see when I get to putting in photos.

So, I'm going to write up a recipe for Banana Sundae, which I made as a surprise for Louise because we all know how much she likes banana! It was also a fantastic excuse to not do any revision for my History exam tomorrow :s (I hastily add I don't actually advocate doing things like this. No, really. Attempt revision. Put in all the will and enthusiasm that you could possibly ever muster. And when that fails, make banana sundae.) Second addition: I just realised Louise mentions avoiding revision in her previous blog post. It evidently runs in the family.

Oh, can I just add that this is sundae as in the ice-cream dessert and not the 'Korean dish made generally by boiling or steaming cow or pig's intestines that are stuffed with various ingredients'. I don't think Louise would have appreciated that. Although it definitely would have qualified as a surprise...

Also, the etymology of 'sundae' is quite interesting. (It occurred to me to look it up because of the 'ae' ending which is usually associated with Latin words, except I had a feeling it wasn't a Latin word. But then again, ice-cream comes from Italy so...) Apparently*, it probably comes from the English/German words for Sunday - I know, you wouldn't have guessed - which may come from the belief that treats like sundaes are eaten at the weekend. Well, this is Tuesday. Close enough. Or, it could come from the German word for sin (sunde) alluding to the unhealthy nature of sundaes. Obviously the second one is rubbish =). If it isn't, it certainly wasn't thought up by the sundae-making industry!

*Read 'apparently' as 'according to Wikipedia'

OK, this is probably enough introductory blurb. You will need...

(By the way, I sort of made the quantities up. This is what I used, but really anything is acceptable. Any fruit. Nuts, biscuits, sauces. Go crazy!!! But PLEASE don't use tea-biscuits and grapefruit. It sounds disgusting)

For two sundaes:

- 2 bananas
- Ice-cream
- Golden syrup
- Chocolate (yeah, these quantities are very vague, I appreciate)
- Fudge things

Tip: don't actually use as many fudge things as are in the picture because it is a bit excessive. I probably ended up only using four. Also, there was way too much chocolate but the great things is it goes well with other stuff too. Pancakes, strawberries (YUM!)

1. Put 2 sundae glasses/bowls into the fridge. Not sure if this does anything, but I felt like it was a good thing to do. Wow, I really am sounding competent here. I won't be surprised if no one tries this recipe!

2. Cut the fudge things into little squares (like how they do them in Pizza Express in their fudge sundae desserts)

3. At the same time, melt the chocolate in a bowl. I was too lazy to get out a pan of water so I put it in the microwave. It took a ridiculously long time because it was on a low heat and I kept checking it every minute (luckily, I sped it up a bit from every 30 seconds). However, I didn't want a repeat of the Chocolate and Weighing Scales Pan disaster. Suffice to say, we can no longer weigh out anything like flour, sugar, etc.

Louise may have mentioned this previously. She's a bit passionate about the whole weighing-scales thing. Oh, and before I make her sound really sad, she IS also passionate about other things too, honestly. OK, I'm seriously digging myself into a hole! =D (Just kiddin')

Maybe I'm getting a bit distracted here... I tend to go on and on and - Right. Back to the recipe:
(Note to self: maybe make an abridged version)

4. Cut up the banana. Make them nice, thick slices. But don't just cut it in half. That will be too thick.

5. When the chocolate is melted, stir in one spoonful of golden syrup (The reasons for adding this extra sugary-ness is that I love pouring golden syrup!! Also, it makes it thick and shiny and a lot more attractive than is conveyed by the photo)

6. Place two scoops of ice-cream in each glass. Lay the banana on top and then put a little more
ice-cream on. Sprinkle the fudge-things on and smother in chocolate sauce. Try to do it a bit nicer than I have. That thing happened when you're dizzling with a spoon and nothing comes off... and still nothing comes off... and then it all comes off in one blob.

7. Serve to sister before she looks at her blog and a) ruins the surprise and b) realises all the stuff I've put in it!

Hope you enjoy the sundae as much as we will. I will make an amendment if it turns out we don't enjoy it.

Bye!
